I am old enough to remember when Wikipedia was considered an unreliable source for research material. In its early days, it was met with skepticism and criticism, especially from academics who insisted on the credibility of printed media. However, over time, Wikipedia evolved into a reliable source of information, even surpassing many traditional printed sources in terms of accuracy and comprehensiveness. Now, we find ourselves at a similar crossroads with large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. While these AI-powered tools face their own set of challenges and limitations, they have the potential to revolutionize knowledge sharing and information retrieval, much like Wikipedia did. In this article, I want to bring you back in time with me to Wikipedia's humble beginnings, exploring the parallels between these two groundbreaking technologies through a storytelling lens, and discussing how rapid advancements could propel LLMs to even greater heights.
