Rupert Holmes is an interesting case of a "one hit wonder" whose story is more complicated than it appears on the surface. I put that in quotation marks because he technically was not one ("Escape (The Pina Colada Song")" was his biggest hit, but he subsequently had two others, "Him" and "Answering Machine"), although for some reason he is perceived as one. But he's done other stuff since, such as turning Charles Dickens' "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" into a Broadway musical (despite the book being famously unfinished at Dickens' death).

Which of Holmes’s hits is the best, in your view? Do any of them have the potential to become an earworm for you?

Obviously "Escape". I love explaining the dumb story in the lyrics to people and seeing how they react.

It really is a great story (though admittedly dumb)! It's hilarious if you just start paying attention for the first time - hiding in plain sight.

I ran cross country in high school and we'd sing the Honeycomb jingle at the start of the race hoping it would slow the other teams down

Honeycomb’s got a big, big bite! Big, big taste in a big, big way!

I like the psychological warfare.

My high school wrestling team’s colors were green and gold. We chose AC/DC’s “Back in Black” for our team’s entrance music for…. for reasons?

Your article reminded me of “on hold” music which I believe to be intentionally distorted and annoying so you will hang up rather than waiting on the line. Fortunately some cell phones have a “hold”function that keeps things quiet until a rep comes online.

I always make myself pretend to enjoy that muzak!

😂 I can’t pretend. It annoys me…
