Wiener Riesenrad (AKA Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel) built a few years later - you can see it in The Third Man with Orson Welles.

It's steel, but the cabins are wood. Cozy; also terrifying

I used to always appreciate roller coasters that are made of both steel and wood. There’s something…dangerous about them? But they’re VERY fun to ride for whatever reason.

COLOSSUS opened up at Magic Mountain when I was in HS. 100% wood. Right before our turn, it pulled in with two people with bloody noses.

Of course we still went on. Side-by-side racing setup

Later that year a woman fell out and died

fun af

So is that where the phrase “big wheel”

originated?

It doesn’t seem like it, but that term did arise during the 1900s, and it shares that industrial connotation with the ferris wheel.
