Let's Find Out
In the spirit of satisfying your own curiosity, few phrases have delighted me more than let’s find out.
If a teacher says it to a classroom full of kids, it means they’re all going on a journey of discovery together. Contrast that with an answer that implies the adult already knows everything, and you’ve got a very different type of atmosphere that the kids will eventually see through.
Let’s find out means going into the wilderness arm in arm, holding a lantern together against the darkness that threatens to envelop you both.
We’ve all had teachers who were of a different variety than let’s find out. Let’s call them the shut up and I’ll tell you camp.
This latter camp did not invite discovery, nor did it inspire curiosity in me. Instead, fear led to eventual resentment—and, ultimately, to resistance. By contrast, the lantern-holders and I found out a lot together.
By the time I was able to find out why this octopus is drunk, I had gravitated toward let’s find out thinkers and away from the I’ll tell you group by choice. In that vein, I want my Substack presence to represent this way of thinking.
