In today's world, people are increasingly drawn to shorter forms of information and entertainment. "TikTok zombies" can sit in front of their phones for hours, consuming content determined by algorithms with questionable motives. While the implications of algorithm-driven content are concerning, an even more pressing issue is that people are being "trained" to pay attention to shorter and shorter things.
The Attention Muscle
Attention is like a muscle, and the ability to focus on complex situations requires practice. Research by Rosen, Carrier, and Cheever (2013) found that the constant barrage of distractions, such as Facebook and texting, negatively impacts the ability to concentrate on meaningful tasks [1]. Deliberate concentration is needed in order to understand today's complex concepts, and sadly, fewer people are willing to invest the time and effort required.
