Ahaa! My wonderful subject! I’m not alone here having had brain surgery to remove a tumour, it was getting bigger and closer to the brain stem hence they had to dig it out but it took me flipping ages to converse like this. I thought what I was saying was what I was thinking… it wasn’t! In some ways my communication needed to redevelop. But as time has wandered along so has my progress and I can do most of the things I used to do but just not quite as well. I hear about people having their tumour(s) removed and they’re back to normal but my complications didn’t help and 4 surgeries within a year was knackering! So the point of me hacking on is knowing the brain works on fixing itself and abilities moving to a different part. See - now I make perfect sense 🤣
You’re getting through! I am so fascinated by the idea of learning to do things with a different part of your brain. Thanks for sharing your experiences here, too! Brain cancer survivors walk among us here.
I’m sure it’s not a surprise that I have a lot to write about brains, but I also must say this: “The Man With Two Brains” is not my favorite Steve Martin movie and it made mad as a kid that no one in fact had two brains as I expected in the movie. But it is one of the more under appreciated works in the Martin oeuvre. It’s actually really entertaining in sections.
Yeah, to be honest? All of Me is a better take on “two minds.” I think Parenthood is peak Steve Martin the family dude, but if I want to laugh at him I need Three Amigos or The Jerk, I think.
All of Me is pretty great and also under appreciated. The Jerk has to be tops for me. I like Three Amigos but Chevy Chase has increasingly bothered me as a presence. I just keep thinking how both he and Bill Murray have a zero ficks approach to comedy but Murray does it more like it’s sincere whereas Chase is hamming for the cameras. It’s a subtle difference, but it makes a big difference to me.
Chevy Chase peaked with Fletch. It was fantastic, but that was his greatest accomplishment. I wasn't a huge fan of the National Lampoon movies, although everyone around seemed to love them. I actually thought Martin Short was way funnier than either of his other two amigos most of the time, and I really loved Ed Grimley (the cartoon) for some reason.
Yeah Martin Short is always great. I really wanted to see the tour he did with Steve Martin. I just couldn’t justify the steep ticket price. I’ve seen Steve Martin perform with The Steep Canyon Rangers and it was always hilarious and impressive just how good he is at picking the banjo. Short is just great at playing either the butt of jokes or being the lead/straight guy. Just a raw talent.
Yeah dude, Steve Martin's musical abilities coupled with comedy and acting really stand out for me. He's just one of those guys who is truly polymathic or whatever, in the same sort of way I aspire to be. With Martin, he seems to have picked a few things to be especially good at, and I guess I've kind of done the same, but not on purpose - and nowhere near as "top of the field" as him. Still, I bet I could cross-body ankle-lock him if we rolled today.
I wish it were possible to do brain transplants. Mine works mostly but it causes so many troubles. I’d assume the same for you. A tumor isn’t the same thing as a TBI but surgeries, radiation, and treatments result in many of the same issues. Hopefully you’ve been spared the worst of it over the last 20 years. It’s pretty hellacious. But at least there’s people like Steve Martin and Schmandrew to help us get through the rougher days.
The good news is that they’ll probably never put two and two together, as long as you keep some kind of physical barrier in between those regions of your brain. Just don’t remove all those tiny, thin plastic walls that were placed in there during your last colonoscopy.

I’ve never read any, but I hear his short stories are well written too. But yeah, you could ankle lock the shit out his ass.
March 17th of this year will be the 20 year anniversary of my traumatic brain injury…just thought I’d share that with you brainiacs 🤷🏽♀️🧠

Great, knowing that I have not two but dozens of brains I'm not fully utilizing is bound to do wonders for my self-esteem!

I mean, nothing!
Two brains, yes. But what about two hearts?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWHk70unAps
