It is the argument with which I began, that a mighty change having come about in fifty years, and our pace of development having immensely accelerated, our sons and grandsons are going to demand and get results that would stagger us.

This quote from Daniel Burnham, an architect and urban planner at the town planning conference of London, from 1910.

Burnham understood what Ray Kurzweil eventually coined the “Law Of Accelerating Returns”, or LOAR for short. The law states that the rate of technological progress accelerates over time, as each new generation of technology builds upon the previous one, leading to an exponential increase in advancements.

As technology improves, it becomes a catalyst for further technological advancements. This creates a positive feedback loop, where each new generation of technology enables faster and more efficient development, leading to an ever-increasing rate of progress.
