In October of 1582, Europe had a problem. Knowing when the seasons would change was incredibly important for farmers and devout Catholics alike. For farmers, the spring equinox represented the moment when day and night were the same length. This meant that there would be more and more light from here on out, and for as long as anyone could remember, it signaled the beginning of the main growing season.
You just know there's that one guy who keeps telling anyone who'll listen about the epic party where he got blackout drunk and passed out from October 4 to October 15.
"Adding this month had a lot of potential political benefit for the powerful Pontifex Maximus. He could shorten a political rival’s term, or postpone the end of a friend’s. He could extract political concessions from vendors who wanted to sell during a religious festival, and he could even control when debts were due (based on the calendar)."
Good lord, let's not be givin' anyone any ideas... 🤔😎
I find it interesting that you picked this particular topic to comment on considering the endless list of mistakes The Church has made throughout the centuries.
I do have one question. How in the world does the equinox “drift”? It’s always and forever, has been, March 20. Give or take a few hours. The correlation of science and religion here makes the narrative a non sequitur
Nice! So many moreayers on that year thing. Like how George Washington has two different birthdays in two different years.
