Same here - the czar one has been on my radar for a long time now, so I was caught off guard by shah's common origin. Clearly, I had to share it with my Danish friends right away!
Great question. It seems like parallel evolution with two very similar (but not identical words) that ultimately became one. That makes it a great example of both parallel and convergent evolution, so: very, very good example.
No, I had NO idea that the word Caesar and Czar were connected. That makes me think of Czar Nicholas ll Thank you for making me aware of that. It was a very interesting read! It makes ALOT of sense too. Do you happen to know of any connection with the word Queen? I know that you said there is one with King because if shah means king...well... I have to admit that is REALLY cool. So, the fact that they are using the word King in the U.K., etc. with King Charles lll means they are STILL connecting things with the Caesar name? Cool! Again though, is there a connection of anykind to the word Queen? Although there isn't killing today. The way I see it, the politics of today really aren't THAT different. Politicians today fight against eachother in almost the same manner. Politicians seem to fight to win the Presidency in ways that will gain peoples attention. Much like they did long ago... today they just do it through ads put on tv. that turn people against eachother and cause violence in what would or could have been a relatively peaceful environment. All the while wondering why violence is caused in society and what frustrates people so much that they turn to violence. Interesting that they can't see, they are teaching it. It's rather ironic... Years haven't changed human nature. I may be wrong there so I must ask just how is that different? I don't see it as being different. At least not 100% and I'm guessing time never will fully change things. ALOT has changed but again not 100%. Again, thank you for the interesting read!
Angela, I know for sure that the word "queen" meant, basically, "woman." It wasn't used to designate a particular stature, just the same way we might use "woman" today. This is from the proto-Germanic line of languages, which diverged away from the romance languages at least a couple thousand years ago.
If we're only looking at that, I don't see much of a change. Curious minds....but do you? I know that some argue or wonder there but it's kinda obvious that the word queen hasn't changed or the way some see females hasn't changed 100%. Partially yes but 100% nope! Just sayin'
That's a good observation: if the names stay the same, it might be indicative that our views are still the same as well. I wonder if there's something there if we pull on this thread a bit.
I must admit that I'm not sure of how to do that at the moment but I do find the topic rather interesting. It's interesting to me when I see the connection in names over time but family history, etc. is also very interesting to me. I may have mentioned that I have Epilepsy. I mention that because I get it from Prince John who would have been King Charles llls great uncle. It doesn't have a THING to do with money, although I am VERY poor but I am VERY VERY PROUD to have even a small amount of their blood. *GRINS* It's interesting to me because I am HUGELY distantly related. There have been MANY throughout the years who have been distantly related and did not have Epilepsy. There should be nothing in my blood left that connects us but there is. Just as there may be some sort of connection to past human behaviours, etc. It's VERY VERY INTERESTING! If you know the story of Prince John, he was found after pictures of him were seen. His parents kept him out of the spotlight due to the fact that stress is the leading cause of seizures. The spotlight could have killed him due to the fact that there was NO medical way of helping him at the time. Athough, there is also the fact that society sees any sort of illness as something to stay away from, etc. As far as bad blood goes, I know for a fact that some in society still thought that when I was growing up. One Church told me as a child that my seizures were caused from the evil in me getting out and I came home crying. I do not know if they think to that extent today but I wouldn't doubt it at all. It's sad really!! My point, I think just as people see females the same way as long ago, they see those like myself (those with Epilepsy, etc.) the same in a way. It's simply that I was not borne in England and do not have the title but the blood is there. A VERY VERY SMALL amount mind you but it's there. People often overlook that which they don't wish to acknowledge. I don't see Prince John as being acknowledged 100% as a royal after death and partially before it. He's not even buried with his family, which is extremely sad because I know that when your Epilepsy is THAT bad all you want is to be seen as normal. As a normal child all you want is to please your parents. That was probably all he wanted and he didn't get it 100% even in death. It's extremely sad! Although, NO MATTER what some may say I believe that his parents loved him. If they didn't love him, he would have been sent to an Epileptic camp, which at that time treated people in awful, unspeakable ways! He was given his own house, people to help him, etc. Shoot! He had a better life than I have today! Even with Epilepsy, he had a better life than many have. I am very VERY glad that he did not have to suffer through what I did in my high school years though. Thankfully my Epilepsy is under control now or mainly but the judgement of society is still there. What I have to give is still hidden in some ways because some are scared of what they do not understand. It's extremely sad and again I did not know that my distant relatives titles were connected to Caesar at all. Thank you!
I was vaguely aware of the caesar/czar, but the "shah" took me off-guard. Curious that they're all derived from the same root!

But what of the Moroccan Ksars, supposedly derived from the arabic قصر (qasr) or fortress.
Same PIE root or confusing parallel evolution?
Great question. It seems like parallel evolution with two very similar (but not identical words) that ultimately became one. That makes it a great example of both parallel and convergent evolution, so: very, very good example.
Started watching Foundation last night and they call their galactic rulers 'Empire'. Kind of has a Caesar ring to it.
Big time. Lee Pace, amirite?
heckya. I really dig the concept of the string of clones Dawn, Day, Dusk and I don't think I've gotten to Dark yet but I think there is a 4th
I think it's just those 3, but the story definitely gets interesting.

I don't suspect the word "king" is related to this family, is it?
No, but that's almost always the sort of question that's nevertheless worth asking. Language can tell us so, so much about ourselves!
