Welcome to Sci-Friday, a weekly ritual whereby a bunch of authors share their “top five” lists of science fiction whatevers, be they movies, TV shows, games… whatever.
Today, I’m going to give you my top five dogs I’ve known who have heads that look like spaceships. These little angels are near and dear to my heart, and I want to share some of their backstory with you today.
If you feel cheated (since I normally give you a sweet sci-fi list of consumable entertainment), you might enjoy last week’s piece on Time Travel Paradoxes, or the previous Five Great Sci-Fi Reads. You’ve also got Five Dystopian Future Films and my Favorite Sci-Fi Shows ever.
With that out of the way, you probably want to see some pics and hear some stories. Let’s get right to it.
Number Five: Dink Dink
You’ve seen her making the rounds of social media; after all, she can’t help being a superstar.
Dink’s profile here reminds me of Battlestar Galactica, but that could be because of Battlestar’s impressive world-destroying capabilities. You see, Dink-Dink sometimes tries to kill me. Sure, I could go with the Death Star here, but if I’m being generous (and I am), the shape is a little closer to this:
Dink-Dink came into our life in the dark midst of the pandemic, and she delights us every day by playing chase every time one of us comes home:
Number Four: Molly
Molly was my soulmate from about 2014-2020. She’s buried in our back yard now, and I’ve slowly come to terms with that. Our unique relationship lives on in hundreds of photos!
Molly and I had this thing we liked to do, where she would bury herself in a hoodie or T-shirt, poking her head out from time to time, like so:
I liken this to a spacecraft carefully emerging from a cave, like this:
Molly really got into the sci-fi spirt, too:
Number Three: Twopert
We took this handsome fellow on shortly after Molly passed, some time in early 2021 or very late 2020. The idea was for him to stay with us until he found a forever home, but we spent a year with Mr. Handsomeface here.
Clearly, Twopert looks like a very wide rocket starting to take off:
Number Two: Hallie
Sure, some of these comparisons to spacecraft are a little goofy, but look at those ears! They might as well be spaceship wings, folding back as Hallie begins her liftoff.
Hallie was with Alley when we first began dating, some 13 years ago. In a manner of speaking, I inherited a child. Fortunately, Hallie got along with me pretty well, and I quickly became known as “the chicken man”, largely because I was responsible for feeding her.
Hallie was my first ever senior Dachschund, and I’ve since been involved with dozens over the years. It’s important to us to continue to be a part of the rescue and foster process, and for me, this all began with Hallie.
Number One: Tiamat
Now we have arrived!
Those ears fold back just like the wings of a fast-moving planetary craft, one that could enter the atmosphere from time to time.
Tiamat was my first love. I was a mere baby adult when I first met her, and Tiamat was six weeks old. Knowing no better, I bought her from a breeder, and I learned so much from her about how to be a dad. We were together for 12 years.
And There You Have It
I hope you’ve enjoyed me indulging my desire to share these important angels, who were (and continue to be) a huge part of my life.
More Sci-Friday Reading
Sci-Friday is so much fun, and I will certainly be back to listing my favorite consumable science fiction for you (I want to be able to talk about these shows, books, movies, etc with you!). In the meantime, you might enjoy checking out some of these authors, who have been enthusiastic participants and are probably writing something this week about sci-fi. Check them out!
, , and all jumped in and got on board super early, and all continue to participate. , , , , , andAlejandro Piad Morffis have been putting out some great stuff.Newest additions are Hefty Matters, Kathryn Vercillo,
, and , all of whom I enjoy a robust discussion. If they’re not talking about sci-fi this week, their work is still worth checking out.
Your love for dogs is unmatched. 👏 I know the indoor domesticated ones gives good company. Most of our dogs here are only reared for security, take care of cows, sheep, and goats.
Now that's the kind of subversion of expectations I can get behind!
Love those doggos.
