As a high schooler, Mom's name was too much like a "John Smith" for her tastes......Jean Davis! I'm not sure if she came up with the alliterative "Dusty," or a friend did, but as she had dirty blonde hair, "Dusty" certainly fit, and became her name for life....'til she passed at 89 on Christmas Eve '16!

I have rewritten the lyrics in my own head for years now, so it's always "crust on your chin."
Beat me to it.
I had never thought about the comment ‘dust to dust’ and now thinking of David Bowie!
It's never a bad time to think of David Bowie.
Certainly not!

I hadn’t considered hair color as a potential factor, but this makes perfect sense. You hear the name “Red” used a lot for similar reasons, right?
Prolly akin (Dusty) to the term "dirty blonde" to describe a similar color!
Better than "doo-doo brown"!
Doo-Doo Brown? No.....she's a stripper, downtown.
