One subset of perception that plays a part in what I do is "suspension of disbelief"- i.e. acknowledging the existence of something that appears to really exist but does not. This is done for every fictional film or video, but is most effective in animation, since it has less elements that would tether it to the "real" world.
Good point - with animation, there is an additional (automatic) necessary step for one to suspend one's disbelief: the way everything looks. You almost have to translate the visuals in real time into something that makes sense to our cro-magnon (or earlier) brains.
