Yeah, the gloves are off now.

Unless they're duel-demanding gloves.

In which case, they're back on, along with the slaps.

Glove-slaps, baby, glove-slaps.

I'll leave this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0xTCKKAgVk

Even when the Simpsons isn't at its best, it's still great. That is awesome, and I hadn't ever heard it before.

Or, I heard it before and forgot.

It's kinda like the glove thing.

Great episode, with Homer demanding satisfaction and someone finally accepting the duel invite.

Not my thing but last night Saucy Mama had it on TV so we watched while eating BBQ. First match was kinda awful - huge people but still mismatched (one guy just had much longer reach but massive-er guy got him on the mat and it was pummel and blood time. Second match was also awful but in a diff way - lower weight class but one dude was intent on the groin and I sweartagod it seemed like that guy didn’t have a cup and they had to stop the match so we could watch him grimace in pain for a really loooong time and then they cut to basketball. Id go back for the BBQ tho

Sounds like violence without much purpose. I really appreciated the nature of the experiment back then and felt the violence was well worth it, but now it's just the main thing. People who are into the sport will argue with me and this is just my own personal perspective, but what I was interested in all those years ago no longer exists today. That's what you saw.

I blame it on McGregor. The guy was exciting and talked a LOT of game. But he backed it up with excitement. Now, everyone is just imitating him (badly).

I don't disagree with the damage his persona did to the spectacle. Er, sport.

Having recognized that, I also witnessed the decline from the inside, at least more than 99% of fans. I think things really started going south around the debut of The Ultimate Fighter, circa 2004. The next year, they kicked out the independent media, and the rest is history.
