They also planted sunflowers in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, both for the symbolic and practical value (turns out sunflowers help extract radioactive materials from the soil).

But, of course, the most epic sunflower-related video will forever be this clip from the early days of Russia's invasion where the lady offers Russian soldiers sunflower seeds to put in their pockets, so that sunflowers would grow out of them when they die: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L17Bi7zBJHI

Yes, that was right up there with the Russian Warship/Moskva!

"Daschund" means "badger dog", so that was the purpose. They got typed as "wiener" dogs likely not only due to the shape but because of the massive hatred directed towards Germany in the two World Wars, when many terms rooted in the German language were changed temporarily or permanently.

David, did you know that we rescue and adopt foster dachshunds? They are crazy little angel-demons!

This rabbit hole has some weird tunnels Andrew. It’s amazing how you went seemingly organically from literal rabbits to dogs to comic and ended with Ukrainian sunflowers and then grain… wow. Your brain works almost as weirdly as mine. 🤔

Ha! Thanks. I really just wanted to have some fun with an actual rabbit hole concept, going all over the place. I figured starting with a real rabbit's hole would be a productive beginning!

Leave it to you to take a brain that works weirdly as a compliment! 🤣 it was of course kindly intended but im not sure someone whose brain doesn’t work weirdly would take it that way! 🤣I like it Andrew never stop doing these!

How boring would things be if we all thought the same way, right?

According to Robert Sapolsky there's no line to be drawn between consciousness and the rest of the body either. For a very depressing analysis see Determined, his takedown of free will. We think of ourselves as prime movers when we are actually resultants of complex, determined but unpredictable systems.

I think we have to remain open as to what consciousness really is and how it emerges. Ideas like this are really important.

Sapolsky does a comprehensive takedown of free will from biological and philosophical perspectives. His core argument is that every other life function has a physical substrate and one that serves will is nowhere to be found. Everything else we know about the human body is deterministic in that operation can be traced through a complex system to basic building block. Fascinating read, highly recommended.

I may well check Sapolsky's writing out; thanks for the recommendation!

Pivoting a bit, but have you seen the TV show Devs yet? It is a fantastic discussion of determinism, like the best I've ever seen in any kind of fiction.

It's those doggone rabbits that have thwarted my sunflower growing aspirations for years! They sure love to maul a tender sunflower sprout. This year, I've got a couple growing within an impenetrable ring of fence.

While the video I showed clearly demonstrated Twopert (our foster) ignoring that one adult rabbit, he was not always so kind when he found one of those little burrows.

Our dogs have had rabbit tartare a few times. The remaining old gal (age 15) is too creaky to go after them now, and it seems like the bunnies know it. I hope she doesn't see them flipping their cottontails at her.

Dink is about 15 too! She won't be catching any rabbits, although she did manage to murder an injured bird once. Savage!

As always you take us through a nice little walk touching on different topics to drive at the main point. I also think sometimes people have lost the ability to talk in depth to connect and understand each other. Having a platform to share ideas that actually provoke conversation instead of people just slinging insults is definitely refreshing and why I think I stop by to read this article when I can.

Glad you're here! I really, really appreciate being able to have legit, meaningful dialogue. And if someone gives me something more substantial to consider, we can have a longer conversation on that basis... maybe today, maybe in a few weeks. There's not a huge sense of urgency to respond immediately because nobody is scrolling through for the next Reels video or whatever.
