But they might not always be serving Coke, in which case you would likely ask for a Pepsi instead. In some areas of the world, Pepsi is considerably more popular, though Coke is still the best known brand name in the cola category.

Sure, but for like 50 years, you could just ask for a Coke anywhere and get a soda.

Okay, not *anywhere*, but Coke certainly became a genericism before I was born.

Yes, you can just say "Coke" and they get it. Coca-Cola has had that advantage virtually since it began in the 19th century.

However, in the French speaking areas of Quebec, Pepsi has long been preferred, to the point that they have been stereotypically associated with it by others.
