We already discussed our mutual love for "The Boys." We're finally about to catch up with Season 4 after wrapping up The Umbrella Academy.

I remember us talking about the Boys!

...is something I might say if I had a better memory. I'll ask you again in three months.

Season 4 did not disappoint. We are going to finish the final episode over the weekend.

Glad I'm not the only one who gets caught in these early morning rabbit holes!

You studied French in High School, I studied Spanish.

Like you, I only occasionally use it, and I can read, write, and understand spoken Spanish better than I can speak it.

I went from Spanish to French to Latin. It's amazing that you can learn Italian by using one of those languages.

I'm currently learning to speak Scots Gaelic, bit by bit.

That's awesome! Latin has made revisiting Portuguese like 100x easier. I'm whizzing through the quizzes right now, based way more on a year or so of Latin than on two trips to Brazil. So crazy!

I think I could handle Spanish and Italian without too much difficulty. I'm ready to revisit French now too, especially since I learned about the uvular R, and kind of realized it 's really just hawking a loogie in the sound of an R.

How is Scots Gaelic? I've obviously become pretty familiar with Romance languages, but apart from a little Japanese (mostly counting and body parts from judo), that's where my language train track ends at the moment.

This is the kind of thing I’ll randomly think about and decide I need to research and then suddenly more than an hour has flown by.

Perhaps you can never be sure…only closer to the truth…

So basically if you need a new word, just tweak an old one. So slang is not informal language, but beta test language.

Yes, although I'm not sure "slang" fully encompasses everything we're after here. Not all slang becomes new language per se, but a lot of it absolutely pushes linguistic evolution forward. Are there other beta tests that are run that aren't slang? I'm not sure!
