One obscure pseudo-profane term I encountered in some MAD magazine articles from the 1950s and 1960s is "furshlugginer". I don't know much about it but it seems to be of Yiddish origin and meant as a substitute for the other F word.
Thanks, David! Forreals, anyone into animation would be well served by just cruising by and checking your stuff out. It might just necessitate a deep dive for that right person, and you never know how these sorts of connections will come about, so I like to be on the lookout for them.
I loved reading those little MAD books from the 50s/60s! I still have maybe 20 of them - you could find them for a quarter at yard sales or maybe fifty cents at used book shops. Common, but also very valuable for me!
Yosemite Sam, beating his way out of a pit of lions or alligators is how I mentally picture crazy shifts at the hospital.
Excellent mental image! And: very accurate based on what I've learned this past year. :)
Thank you for the shoutout, Andrew.
I publish fiction and essays at "Made From What's Not Real" (https://davidperlmutter.substack.com/) and non-fiction about animation at FOCUS! (https://focus966.substack.com/). I am having a sale on paid subscriptions this summer at both sites, by which you can purchase one for half-price, until Sept. 5. You can purchase them for each place respectively at these two links: https://davidperlmutter.substack.com/0c7331eb and https://focus966.substack.com/halfoffsale.

Fortunately for MAD, their stuff is largely still funny after so many years and can be reprinted ad nauseum.
Agree. Also, during a zombie apocalypse with no internet, those 20 books will provide me weeks of amusement!
Or a blackout, if you have a battery powered flashlight.
Holy crickey! This is the first time I hear the term "minced oaths," but I already love it.
I'll be danned!
This was brand new to me, and i love it so flippin' much!
Fugly
Damned good one!
Bugs Bunny was absolutely seminal in my young boy's life!
Awesome. I think Bugs is broadly righteous, though he does tend to get a bit arrogant from time to time - his achilles' paw, I suppose.
I see a lot of Youtubers using frick now as they get demonetized for dropping too many f-bombs. Sugar has also been used instead of shit.
